Mayreau is the smallest inhabited island in the Grenadines chain, characterised by long dry seasons (7-8 months). As a consequence, the community faces serious challenges to its food and water security. WAM plays an important role in developing solutions to this problem. We have implemented a sustainable agriculture program in our efforts to increase water capacity for farmers and households. More than 95% of our food is imported, a practice that can only be described as unsustainable. We struggle not only with long dry seasons and uncertain water supplies (all water is captured through rainwater harvesting), but also with the island's unique land ownership dynamics, which result in land being inaccessible for agricultural purposes. WAM's goal is to educate, train, and provide our farmers with skills, tools, and technology to improve food production, land availability for agriculture, and water security.
