We Are Mayreau, Inc.(WAM), is an all-female collective founded in September 2016 with the goal of improving access and participation, health and well-being for members of our small island community. The Mayreau community is characterized by a synergistic, resilient, and independent spirit. Our greatest motivation, is our commitment to reviving dying aspects of our culture and to ensure that we maintain, protect and transmit this unique spirit of Mayreau to present and future generations. As such, we are focused on holistic empowerment; taking a multifaceted approach to address issues affecting the people and the natural environment.
Our island's history is one of geographic exclusion and restricted access to opportunities for personal and communal development. As a consequence, we are witnessing the advent of a people increasingly focused on survival at the expense of leading healthy and happy lives.
We Are Mayreau, Inc. (WAM) aims to promote the positive aspects of our island: both our people and environment. We seek to develop healthy means for our community to motivate each other toward self-sufficiency, sustainability, holistic wellbeing, and happiness. Our name is intended to convey a sense of inclusion, shared ownership, and belonging.
Our tagline "Better Together" is critical to fulfilling our mission. We believe that by working together, we have the power to transform our community into a model for social change characterized by:
We take a holistic approach to defining success that takes into account our responsibility for our mental, physical and spiritual health, as well as our care for each other and our environment.
We seek to provide sustainable solutions to issues of:
"The strongest people are those supported by a loving family"
Mayreau is more than a community of people, we are "famalay" in every essence of the word. Our bonds are characterized by love, care and generosity. Our goal as an organization is to strengthen those bonds and support families through education and training, social events and livelihood support.
